What is your teaching style and philosophy?
I truly believe that education is the key to changing the world, and the change that I, like most people, want to see is a more just and equal society. We must recognize and promote education as a way of social mobility. Children have the right to not just an education, but a high-quality education. I use inquiry-based lessons and experiments in the classroom that allow me to plant a seed of curiosity, transforming my students from passive to active learners.
How do you see the SIUC Noyce Master Teaching Fellowship in Environmental Sustainability influencing you as an educator, your classroom and your community?
The Master Teaching Fellow Program will change my teaching for the better by providing hands-on experience and resources that I can in-turn present to the community of Gallatin County. A problem that is always facing the students in my school is a lack of exposure to new fields of study and career paths. It is one of my responsibilities to present these opportunities and maintain an environment for learning. Becoming an active member of the research team would allow me to experience and develop new leadership skills that could be used towards shaping public policies.
